Top 10 best posts: Blog Post Types you should absolutely use

I am always looking for the best information and learning about best practices regarding marketing online. Sometimes this can be quite tough since the best information is behind pay-gates. But not always. This list type post  you are currently reading (aka aggregate post or curated post) is one example of a blog post type anyone can easily put together.

The Aggregate Post type  or “Listicle” should not be confused with the Automated Content Aggregation that Matt Cutts flagged as bad practice. We’re not talking about automated news feed widgets here.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way – let’s look at what the Top Ten posts for “Types of Blog Posts” reveal.

SIDEBAR: This post as mentioned before is an Aggregate Post of other people’s blog posts. Yes, you absolutely can use other people’s material in this way – but there are some rules:

  1. Don’t copy the entire article – rather quote a section and include a link to the original article. Why? You don’t want to be flagged as plagiarising or having duplicate content. I’ve used the “Read More” anchor text. You could use the name of the company or author as anchor text for the link.
  2. Make sure you add value to the reader – discuss, comment on or add your own thoughts.

How to get the best out of this post:
I have treated this post as a Research/Tutorial/Aggregate/Listicle. If ever there was such an animal, here it is. Under each Listed Post, there is a “Quick Overview” accordian item which will reveal what each article has listed as a “Blog Post Type”. I have, for your convenience, put all of this into one spreadsheet which you can download at the end of the article.

UPDATE – Another Great Resource for Blog Ideas (and a practical example of Link Building):

I was pleased to receive an email from Gael Breton over at Authority Hacker requesting a link to their newly minted article on the subject of  Blog Post Ideas. It’s a good read and full of good ideas and in-depth how-to’s. On the subject of link-building – Gael did a bang up job of reaching out to me with a concise reason for linking out to his blog post. So I did. Getting links from authority sites to your blog post can do wonders for your SEO. It’s tough getting those links – but when you do… it’s worth the effort.

In Summary:

Each of the articles had their own perspective on “blog post types” – some had a few, others expanded into just too many items to remember. So what I’ve done for you is break all these types into broader categories. (You can download the Excel Spreadsheet below)

The categories I used to do this is borrowed from Digital Marketer’s Russ Henneberry who delivers a fantastic How-to on the subject. (BTW – Digital Marketer Lab is an amazing resource and worth every penny).

I hope this post is helpful.
